As experienced riders we all know something useful or interesting that can help other riders, especially novice riders or riders who are venturing into new fields. For example; how to deal with your first yearling, your first foal or even your first time loading your horse into your new trailer or horsebox.
Send us your own hint, tip or idea and help other riders. You never know, you just might find something here that will help you.
For a really effective and completely natural fly repellent try this ....
Take one large jar with a tight lid and fill it ¾ full of olive oil.
Add a full head of garlic, slightly crushed and place it in the oil.
Let that sit for about a week, shaking it every couple of days.
Its very stong, so keep out of the eyes, but if you use a foam paintbrush, you can paint it around the eyes, and in the ears, or wherever you'd like. Because its garlic, its also great to put between itchy teats. I also sometimes paint the lower legs. Do the ears and no more ear gnats. Re-apply as needed.
You can use this all summer, just by adding more olive oil. I make a new batch every year, as it can get a bit rancid after about 6 months.
My own natural fly spray is:
1 part cold-pressed olive oil
1 part apple cider vinegar
2-3 parts water (depending on how strong you like it, how sensitive
your horse's skin is, etc.; I do about 2.5 parts water)
And 10-20 drops each of orange oil, eucalyptus oil, and lavender oil.
Works like a charm, makes them smell nice, and I swear the lavender oil mellows them out.
I had to come up with this out of necessity after Fidgit had an allergic reaction to every shop bought fly spray on the market.
