Epworth Wesley Memorial Church Wesley Memorial Church, Epworth

"We live by faith not by sight." - 2 Corinthians 6:7(NIV)

Entering the Epworth Memorial Church has always been counted a privilege by many people who have visited over the years, and by those who worship week by week in this place.

Only some of the events through the Century have been recorded, but they will bring back memories to those who took part in them.

From time to time much thought and money have been spent in keeping the Chapel building worthy of it's founders, but, as true methodists, let us remember the words of John Wesley. - THE WORLD IS MY PARISH

Epworth Isle of Axholme Fencing Club Isle of Axholme Fencing Club

The Isle of Axholme Fencing Club Website. We fence every Wednesday night at the Village hall in West Butterwick. 6.30pm for children and 8.00pm for adults.

The Isle of Axholme Fencing Club was formed in December 2000. In the first instance it was run solely by the coach Dave Jerry, following successful taster sessions held in Epworth Leisure centre in October of that year.

The first training sessions were held in the Wesley Memorial Church Hall but the interest soon out grew that venue and by February a move was made the Haxey Primary School hall. Initially only Foil was catered for but the other two weapons soon began to hold fencer’s interest. We now have a strong following for Foil Epee and Sabre.

Epworth The Haxey Hood The Haxey Hood

The old and unusual game known as the Hood Game, or Throwing the Hood, is played every year on Old Christmas Day, January 6th, at Haxey in north Lincolnshire.

On this date, Haxey Hood, one of the two annual Feasts of the parish, is held. Haxey Hood has a character all its own. It is the great festival occasion of the parish year, when everyone keeps holiday and some very 'interesting' traditional customs are observed.

The ceremonies of Haxey Hood begin in the early afternoon with the procession of the Fool and his twelve ‘Boggans’ up the village street to a small green outside the parish church. The Boggans are the official team of players in the Hood Game, and play against all comers; they are, and need to be, vigorous young men who are often useful members of the local football team.

Chief among them is the King Boggan, or Lord of the Hood, who carries a wand, or roll of thirteen willows bound with thirteen withy-bands as a badge of office.

Tradition demands that he and all his team should wear scarlet flannel coats, and hats wreathed with red flowers. A few Boggans may turn out in their ordinary clothes, but invariably the ritual red appears somewhere in their dress, if only in the form of an armband or some fluttering scarlet ribbons....... more
