California Equestrian California is the most populous state in America and it's still growing. It's also the third largest with only Alaska and Texas larger than it. Visit California and you'll see varied and beautiful landscapes that include mountains, valleys, and waterfalls. The state shares the Sierra Nevada, a mountain range named after the highest mountain range in Spain, with the state of Nevada. You'll be able to see Mount Whitney, the highest mountain peak in the United States outside of Alaska and in Redwood National Park you'll see the world's tallest tree, which stands about 370 feet high.

California Statehood was granted on September 9, 1850.

The State Animal is the California grizzly bear.

The State Bird is the California quail and the State Fish is the golden trout.

The California State Color is a combination of blue and gold and the State flower is the poppy.

California has also adopted an insect, which is the California dogface butterfly and a marine mammal, the California gray whale.

The State Motto is 'Eureka' meaning, "I have found it"

In addition to great heights, California also shares Death Valley with Nevada, the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere.

Death Valley temperatures can reach a deadly 134 °F. Besides Death Valley, California also contains Salinas Valley, John Steinbeck's childhood home, and experience spectacular waterfalls, fantastic rock formations, and huge sequoias at Yosemite National Park.

California Weather - California's climate is often compared to that of the Mediterranean, due to warm, dry summers, and mild, wet winters.

On the coast, average yearly temperatures range between the low 40s°F (4.4°C) and in the high 70s°F (21.1°C) and 80s°F (26.7°C).

Farther inland, summers are hot and dry, and at higher altitudes the weather is more typical of a four-seasons cycle with cold, snowy winters.

The contrast is clear in the state’s two largest cities, where you’ll find very different weather patterns.

Riding in California truly provides a combination of beautiful landscape and quality riding. The contrast of the majestic redwood forests and the long, sandy beaches of the Pacific Ocean in California provides some wonderful opportunities for long canters and excellent beach rides.

California Trail Riding Will Rogers State Historic Park has ripped up tarmac and re-introduced a barn and corral to restore things to a simpler time when horses dominated travel.

Humboldt Redwoods has over 80 miles of trails open for riding. Good staging areas include Cuneo Creek Horse Camp, the Old Mill Site and Blue Slide Day Use Area.

Ride through Jackson State Forest, along the headwaters of the Noyo River, under the towering redwoods. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the forest, followed by a long afternoon ride along the old Indian Springs Trail.

Horseback ride on miles of trails across gentle, rolling oak woodlands or ascend from 1200' on the Tule River to 3,000' on Lumreau Mountain. Ride your horse into the Giant Sequoia National Monument and return to the river via alternate long or short loop trails. Drink in stunning views of oaks, green pastures and Lumreau Mountain from vista points along the river trail. Be inspired by views from the top of Lumreau Mountain towards Dennison Peak, Dillonwood Grove in Sequoia National Park, Maggie and Moses Mountain and Slate Mountain or turn your eyes west for a glimpse of the Coast Range. Excellent horseback riding can be found at the Three Rivers Hideaway on the Kaweah River, located in the Central Valley Region. There is a full-service RV park, campground and motel and it's situated just three miles from Sequoia National Park and five miles from Lake Kaweah.

The Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge in Willows offer good access horseback riding, biking, hiking and swimming.

In Temecula Valley, part of the Inland Empire Region, the 6,040-acre Lake Skinner offers 18 developed equestrian campsites with electricity, and 178 full hookups.

The scenic grandeur of trail riding in California's Klamath National Forest creates a superb setting for a Western riding holiday. Ride through ancient Doug Fir tree stands and up to high vistas with views across deep river valleys and granite ridge tops. The terrain offers dramatic, varied and rugged so horse and rider are provided with an evolving backdrop of challenges, obstacles and landscapes.
